The Youxiantang Collection is a collection of Chinese antiquities in Johannesburg — built up over decades through the lifelong pursuit of the collector, Johann Kritzinger. The book documenting it took him and his daughter seven years to research, write and publish. I was entrusted with the design of the book cover and its debossed text and image.
The design is elegant and minimal, to complement the beautifully photographed images of the collection. The book was printed lithographically and hand bound in black Brillianta fabric, with the title debossed on the spine and the silhouette of a Han horse debossed on the cover — an interpretation of a Han Dynasty terracotta horse in The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s collection.
