When the protected Rand Steam Laundry buildings were illegally demolished, the settlement required them to be put back. I was the architect who redesigned the lost structures from surviving historic records and drawings, so they could be rebuilt faithfully — reconstructing what should never have been torn down.
On the edge of early Johannesburg, Zulu washermen known as the AmaWasha built the city’s first Black-run laundry trade beside a stream clean enough that hotels shipped their linen to it from as far as Cape Town. That trade grew into the Rand Steam Laundries — an industrial complex the city later protected as heritage.
In the early 2000s the developer Imperial illegally demolished those protected buildings to clear the way for a car dealership. Heritage campaigners — led by Flo Bird and the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation — picketed, took on the city, and stopped the dealership. Only the old filtration tower survived.
The settlement that followed required the lost buildings to be reinstated, and that is where my work sat: reconstructing the demolished structures from surviving records, photographs and drawings, so the turn-of-the-century laundry could be rebuilt accurately rather than merely evoked.
The reinstated buildings then set the architectural language for the retail centre that opened on the site in 2019 — exposed brick, steel and timber trusses carrying the memory of the original works forward.
