Architecture ZA 2018 (#AZA18), Africa’s premier urban cultural festival focused on architecture, was held at 012central in the Pretoria inner city, 3–5 May 2018 — presented by the South African Institute of Architects and co-hosted by the University of Pretoria and Tshwane University of Technology.
The exhibition Pretoria Inner City: Formation and Transformation explored the complex layered history of the inner city through the evolution of three iconic modernist city blocks along the Church Street spine — a palimpsest of 19th-century pastoral fabric, infrastructural incisions and forced removals, a monumental late-20th-century CBD, and the dramatic shift in demographics and use after 1994.
The exhibition centred on a 1:500 3D-printed interactive city model of 24 city blocks, which I designed and printed — using a series of 3D printers, some designed by myself and some built from kits, alongside custom laser cutters. Most of the printers ran 24/7 for three months to complete the model.
